I International Congress for Patients with Osteoarthritis 2017
The Osteoarthritis Foundation International (OAFI) together with the most important worldwide recognized associations of patients that treat rheumatologic diseases, met in Barcelona on October 9th and 10th to provide solutions to osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that affects both the cartilage and the bone and soft tissues of the joint. Worldwide, it is estimated that 242 million people suffer from osteoarthritis, from which 7 million in Spain.
Despite its social impact, osteoarthritis remains an unknown and distant disease for most of society, which associates it exclusively with ageing.
With the aim of giving notoriety to the disease and visibility to people suffering from osteoarthritis, the Osteoarthritis Foundation International (OAFI) organized the I International Congress of Patients with Osteoarthritis, with the collaboration of the Obra Social “la Caixa”. The event took place on October 9th and 10th at CosmoCaixa Barcelona.
However, it affects a very fragmented patient population with very different needs: elderly people, athletes, postmenopausal women and even young people.
For the first time in history a congress is going to be held to to treat this pathology in an exclusive way” says Dr. Josep Vergés, OAFI’s president. “From our Foundation, we think it is important to give OA patients attention. Many times, this pathology is associated with old age and the patients feel alone and misunderstood. However, osteoarthritis is a painful disease that directly affects the mobility and autonomy of the person who suffers it with the psychological wear and tear it entails. Moreover, it is linked to other co-morbidity problems such as hypertension or cardiovascular diseases, among others.
Partnerships
International and national patient associations such as Arthritis Foundation (USA), Spanish League of Rheumatology (LIRE), Pan-American League of Rheumatology Associations (PANLAR), Spanish Association with Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (AECOSAR) besides the International Osteoarthritis Foundation (OAFI), among others, will meet in Barcelona to give prominence to patients with osteoarthritis, know their health demands and promote research and innovation in this disease.
About 150 million patients will be represented among all these associations which will take advantage of the meeting to hold the second meeting of the International Osteoarthritis Patients Task Force (OA Task Force).
The I International Congress for OA Patients will become a meeting point for patients, public administration, medical and scientific societies, research and development centers and other entities which promote awareness about this disease.
Program
The program includes social activities, round tables and conferences where experts will talk about osteoarthritis as a challenge for the future, the quality of life of patients, OA in athletes and postmenopausal women, physicians and empowered patients relationship and the patient role in R+D+I and in the drugs regulation, among other topics.
The Congress coincides with the week on which World Arthritis Day (October 12) is celebrated. Attendance to the event is free and open to all ages. More information here.

El 9 y 10 de octubre tuvo lugar en CosmoCaixa Barcelona el I Congreso Internacional de Pacientes de Artrosis, organizado por la Fundación OAFI.
Más de 300 personas, en su mayoría pacientes de artrosis, asistieron a la cita y participaron en la diversidad de mesas redondas sobre la enfermedad: artrosis y deporte, mujer y artrosis, el papel del paciente en la investigación...
También pudieron participar en una sesión de taichí e iniciarse en el mundo de la marcha nórdica, dos actividades que pueden ser muy beneficiosas para los pacientes de artrosis
La relación médico-paciente empoderado en el siglo XXI ARTROSIS
Mesa redonda sobre la relación entre el médico y el paciente empoderado en el campo de la artrosis. Representantes de diversas sociedades médicas implicadas en la gestión de la artrosis debaten sobre los nuevos rols de médicos y pacientes.
