Osteopenia is an underdiagnosed condition that represents an intermediate stage in the decline of bone mineral density, preceding osteoporosis, a serious disease. Although it does not reach the diagnostic thresholds for osteoporosis, osteopenia involves significant bone deterioration and doubles the risk of fracture compared to the healthy population.
Some of the key points of this consensus:
The important role of patients in managing their disease, within a multidisciplinary framework, incorporating patients’ experiences.
Prevention and early detection campaigns, based on risk factors and patient stratification.
Preventing falls with prevention programmes such as OAFI Space, which, together with a team of doctors and architects, certifies spaces according to their suitability for osteoarticular health.
Take into account comorbidities and concomitant treatments.
Personalised and holistic approach, the result of shared decision-making.
Implement guidelines for patients and professionals, covering support.
This consensus reinforces OAFI’s line of work in its Prevention Campaigns, promoted by the OAFI Solidarity Clinic, and initiatives such as OAFI Space, with the support of medical societies, universities, companies and healthcare professionals to improve the approach to musculoskeletal health.
Osteoarthritis directly affects people’s mobility and independence, with the psychological strain that this entails. It is also associated with other comorbidities such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease, among others.
In a society where life expectancy is increasing, this type of condition should be considered a major concern. That is why at the OAFI Foundation we work to put patients at the centre of the disease and help them to have a voice and be heard. All our actions are designed to benefit patients and prevent osteoarthritis in people who have risk factors for developing it.
There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but the pain can be controlled and significantly reduced.
The key lies in what you do every day: exercise, eat better, sleep well, ask for help, stay informed…
💬 You are not alone. At OAFI, we are here to accompany you on your journey towards a life with less pain and better quality.
We work every day to improve the approach to and treatment of osteoarticular pathologies through research and knowledge.
Osteoarthritis Foundation International (OAFI) is the first and only non-profit foundation in the world dedicated exclusively to people suffering from osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and other osteoarticular conditions. Founded in 2016 and based in Barcelona, OAFI leads the global fight for joint health, promoting education, prevention, research and patient support programmes. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of those living with these conditions by promoting early detection, self-care and patient empowerment. Through international conferences, awareness campaigns, scientific projects and collaborations, OAFI works to place joint health at the centre of the health and social agenda.
